Benchworking Lab
The Benchworking Lab provides flexible space for project assembly and finishing. Here you will find mobile workbenches, hand tools, and cordless Makita power tools. This space is also used periodically as a classroom environment for workshops and skill-building demonstrations.
Woodworking Lab
The Woodworking Lab is a world-class facility for the processing of lumber, sheet goods, plastics, and foam and consists of a CNC router and suite of stationary equipment
  • CNC Router

A CNC (computerized numerical control) Router is an automated router. Working as a subtractive tool, this machine can be used for rapid and efficient milling of materials like wood, MDF, foam, and certain acrylics. This can also be used to design furniture for rapid assembly, utilizing “slot and tab” joinery, or for limited sculptural applications.

  • Sliding Table Panel Saw

This table saw is designed for safe and efficient breakdown of 4 x 8 sheet goods. It utilizes a rail which slides along the saw and blade to allow the user to rapidly break down a sheet.

  • Combination Planer Jointer

This tool allows the user to machine lumber which is cupped, warped, or too thick, before processing on the table saws or compound miter saw.

  • Bandsaws

This tool is intended for resawing functions, for boards which need to be cut in half with the longest plane of the board tight against the fence.

  • Edge Sander

This sander allows the user to sand and shape their material after it has been cut.

  • Oscillating Spindle Sander

This sander is designed to assist with sanding functions in relation to radial profiles.

  • Table Saw

This table saw is allows the user to run wooden and sheet good materials through the blade to cut them down to size.

  • Miter Saw

The compound miter saw is a tool which allows the user to cut stick goods down to size. It can be adjusted to allow for compound bevel cuts.

  • Drill Press

This tool allows the user to manipulate a stalk to drive a drill bit into material to bore holes.

Surfacing Lab
The Surfacing Lab is a walk-in fume extraction room for applying finishes and working with surfacing compounds such as bondo or fiberglass.
  • HVLP System

HVLP stands for “high volume, low pressure.” Any spray system for paints and varnishes uses air pressure to propel the finish. This tool allows the user to thin down paint so that it can be applied to the project as an aerosol spray.

Welding Lab
The Welding Lab is a well-ventilated room outfitted with top-of-the-line equipment generously furnished by Lincoln Electric.
  • TIG Welder

TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welders allows the user to weld alloys of different types to each other, with varying degrees of precision.

  • MIG Welder

MIG (metal inert gas) welder allows the user to weld mild steel together.

  • Plasma Cutter

A plasma cutter allows the user to cut organic shapes out of sheet steel using plasma.

  • Fixturing Table

This tool is used in conjunction with the MIG and TIG welder to fixture loose project pieces securely to a flat surface, in the desired orientation, so that they can be welded together.

Metalworking Lab
The Metalworking Lab emphasizes sheet metal fabrication and provides access to a broad range of forming and cutting equipment.
  • High-Wattage Laser

This CNC machine is capable of cutting through ¼” plate steel, and can be programmed to quickly and efficiently cut a variety of profiles through sheet metal.

  • Box and Pan Brake

This tool is for bending sharp angles into sheet metal.

  • Hydraulic Shear

This tool is for cutting sheet metal quickly and efficiently.

  • Electric Slip Roll

This powered tool can be used to roll sheet metal into radial profiles.

  • Horizontal Band Saw

This tool can be used in a vertical or horizontal position to cut through sheet and bar steel.

  • Drill Press

This tool allows the user to manipulate a stalk to drive a drill bit into material to bore holes.

  • Belt Sander

This tool is designed for metal use and allows the user to place metal against a belt sander to shape, grind away imperfections.

  • Bench Grinder

This tool is designed for metal use, and allows the user to place their material against a course grinding stone to grind and shape their material.

Rapid Prototyping and Design Lab
The Rapid Prototyping and Design Lab houses multiple digital fabrication tools including laser engravers and CNC equipment, electronics prototyping and soldering workbenches, and a flexible workspace periodically used for workshops and skill-building demonstrations.”
  • Laser Engravers

These tools allow the user to rapidly cut, etch, and engrave parts.

  • Vinyl printer/cutter/plotter

This tool allows the user to print high-quality images for use as stickers, logos, posters, or heat transfers, depending on the type of media loaded into the machine.

  • CNC Mill

A CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) milling machine manufactures high-quality parts to a high level of detail and finish. CNC milling machines use rotary tools to cut away at the material, with instructions originating from the CAD file, to create the part design.

  • CNC Lathe

This tool allows the user to machine parts out of metal in a radial fashion—it is capable of processing various alloys in conjunction with the cooling system: steel, aluminum, etc.

  • Soldering Station

This pen-like tool allows the user to solder electrical components together.

Additive Manufacturing Lab
The Additive Manufacturing Lab hosts multiple 3D printing technologies for the creation of complex geometries in a broad palette of materials.
  • SLA Printer (2)

These printers can print high-quality parts in a variety of materials in different properties, hardnesses and durometers.

  • SLS Nylon Printer

These machines are capable of producing high-quality parts in Nylon, using a process called “sintering.”

  • SLS Metal Printer

These machines are capable of printing high-quality parts in steel, using a process called “sintering.”

  • Polyjet Printer

This machine can produce high-quality, end-finish parts in any Pantone color.

The Cave
The Cave is a flexible learning environment and small-scale computer lab, host to workshops on CAD/CAM software, Automation, and digital fabrication workflows.”
  • Collaborative Robots

These collaborative robots, or “Cobots”, can be paired with a wide array of end effectors and are intended to be paired alongside individuals in a wide range of industrial and manufacturing settings to assist human beings. They can be programmed to learn multiple tasks.
